Training Through a Texas Summer? Here’s What Your Muscles Are Trying to Tell You

Athlete training outdoors in summer

If you’ve run, cycled, golfed, or chased a soccer ball anywhere near Spring or The Woodlands this month, you already know: a Texas July doesn’t care about your training plan. Triple-digit heat index, humidity that never lets up, and muscles that feel tighter, heavier, and slower to recover than they did in March.

That’s not in your head. Heat changes how your body recovers — and it changes what kind of massage therapy will actually help.

Why summer workouts leave you sorer

When you train in high heat, your body diverts blood flow toward your skin to shed heat. That’s great for keeping your core temperature down, but it means your working muscles get less circulation exactly when they need it most. Add fluid and electrolyte loss from heavy sweating, and you get the classic Texas-summer combo: cramping, delayed soreness that lingers into day two or three, and that “concrete legs” feeling on your next workout.

Most people respond by stretching more or pushing through. There’s a better option — but the right one depends on what your body is actually doing.

Sports massage vs. deep tissue: they’re not the same thing

These two get used interchangeably, and they shouldn’t be.

Sports massage is built around your training cycle. It uses a variety of techniques — often faster-paced and rhythm-focused — to promote circulation, maintain flexibility, and help prevent injury. It’s what you want around activity: before a weekend tournament, after a long run, or as regular maintenance during a heavy training block. In summer, this is the one that directly addresses the circulation problem heat creates.

Deep tissue massage is slower and more targeted. Deliberate, focused pressure works into the deeper layers of muscle and connective tissue to release chronic tension patterns — the stubborn knot between your shoulder blades, the hip that’s been cranky since spring, the low back that tightens up after every round of golf. It’s less about your last workout and more about the pattern that’s been building for months.

Here’s the honest answer to “which one do I need?”: it depends on the day, and sometimes it’s both. A runner with tight calves from heat cramping and a two-year-old shoulder issue doesn’t fit neatly into either box — and that’s fine, because you don’t have to choose off a menu.

Why we assess first

This is the part we’re a little stubborn about at Woodlands Massage Company. Every appointment starts with a conversation and an assessment: how you’re feeling that day, what you’ve been doing, where the trouble spots are. Then your Licensed Massage Therapist builds the session around what your body actually needs — which might be sports massage techniques on your legs and deep tissue work on your shoulders in the same hour.

Rose has been practicing massage therapy since 2007, and if there’s one thing that experience makes clear, it’s this: no two bodies present the same way, even with the same complaint. A one-size-fits-all massage gives you one-size-fits-all results.

Three things you can do this week (besides booking)

  1. Hydrate before, not just after. By the time you feel thirsty in Texas heat, you’re already behind. Muscles low on fluid cramp more easily and recover slower.
  2. Don’t skip your cooldown because it’s hot. Five minutes of easy movement helps your circulation do the recovery work heat is fighting against.
  3. Pay attention to soreness that changes character. Normal post-workout soreness fades in 48–72 hours. Tightness that lingers, recurs in the same spot, or changes how you move is your body flagging a pattern worth addressing.
